Got to be honest, friend-readers . . .
i’ve been keeping paul hawken’s BLESSED UNREST to myself
second time thru, taking my time, relishing page by page
putting off telling you so til i reached the end
well, it dawns on me
ma herself don’t work that way
things spread as they’re revealed
so here goes, sharing as i underline
trusting paul speaks to you as he does me
here’s what hit me yesterday in doc’s office . . .
Whether or not the earth itself is an organism, as some scientists believe, it is one system, and within that system all life as we know it coexists. If the erosion of indigenous ways of life represented only a cultural clash, it would qualify as a human rights issue, certainly, but one without much legal impetus, because nowhere is there a law that a culture has a right to survive. But it is now recognized as a salient issue for the whole of the globe, and it will only grow stronger as corporations face people who believe that the life of the earth, the mother of all nourishment in Mayan culture, is even more valuable than their individual lives. As resource values rise and living systems decline, the conflict will grow more pronounced, unless we change our understanding of what we value. If we want greater amounts of gas and gold, they will come at severe cost to ourselves and all who follow.
